I took my car into a shop (don't know them, first time customer) just to have the summer tires put on. The mechanic called to tell me my "front, lower ball joints were worn" and asked if I'd like a quote for repair. I have noticed NOTHING to indicate that they're worn. No shimmy, no shake, no pull, the car drives straight and smooth as glass. Is this guy trying to scam me because I'm a chick??

Try asking around for references to another shop , still might get same answer , but it does improve the odds of it being correct.

I do know another mechanic that is reputable, but far away... this guy who did my tires is right next to where I work. I guess I'll have to get it into a mechanic I trust. Also: He quoted me $48 to mount all four tires. When I went in to pick it up, he said, "That'll be $78". I showed him my list of other places and their prices, including his quoted price (he was the lowest, that's why I chose him). He accepted the quoted price. THAT was another red flag, in my opinion. Also, with the summer tires, there's still NO vibration, shimmy, pull or anything.
