front end alignment necessary? on 2001 Ford Taurus

I am having the tires replaced on my 2001 taurus. The mechanic insists that the front end should be aligned (without even seeing the car). Is this true?

To warentee the tires tire shops insist on having the wheel alignment checked. If no tire wear is present due to toe set, caster or camber issues they should not have to make any serious adjustments but even normal driving coming in contact with the occasional pot hole can though the steering alignment off just a little bit. If you refuse a check of the alignment they can invalidate any unusual tire wear later saying you refused a check of the alignment when you bought the tires.
