automatic transmission works fine and all indicator lites for engaging four wheel drive operate as they should. Has been working fine with no special circumstances that might break it but all of a sudden it no longer engages into four wheel drive. Is it the transfer case or could it have something to do with the hub engagement mechanism?

You need to find an Isuzu specialist or a 4X4 shop to inspect the vehicle and give you a diagnosis. I can't tell you what's wrong without seeing the vehicle.
If you want to find a specialist, here's a directory link for you:

On my 90 Trooper, there is a button on the transmission stick that must be moved into the 4 wheel as well as the Hubs. I am sure you know also the difference between 4H and the 4L settings as well. Perhaps you dont have the button in the right position? Hope that helps. May also be time to check the Transmissionm fluid level. Good luck. RWill1990
