Ford Contour Repair and Maintenance
A guide to problems, costs, maintenance and repair for your Ford Contour
Ford Contour Problems
Transmission problems are common in this model, often as a result of a failed front pump. The pump loses its ability to create hydraulic pressure, which an automatic transmission needs to function. A sign of front pump failure can be a whine type noise.
The Check Engine Light can illuminate with codes due to the lack of EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) flow caused. This is commonly a result of a clogged passage in the intake manifold. To correct this problem, the EGR valve has to be removed and the passage cleaned thoroughly. Partial restriction of this passage can cause smog test failures for the NOx emissions without causing a drivability symptom.
If the vehicle hesitates or idles roughly after being parked for twenty to thirty minutes, with the engine still warmed to normal operating temperature, you may need to reprogram the PCM (powertrain control module) with new calibration.

Ford Contour Reviews
the battery will not hold a charge. some times it will run for a few days or 100 miles or better, then stop with a dead battery. checked for a circuit fault none found. alternator is the suspect but can't understand why it will run the 100 miles or better then the next time it won't last 10 miles on a fresh charge..
i got a lot of rumbling going on and stalling when i come to a red light..dont know what it is plus i have a small oil leak in front passenger side
I bought my '98 Contour with 26,000 miles on it. It now has 97,000 miles. No problems with the exception of an anti-lock brake module whose 60 amp fuse is shared with the blower motor. But after 70,000 + miles, I have no real complaints. The car handles so well--like a "real" German car. (2.0 I-4 VCT Zetec, 5 spd). A winner !!
