Question: flex converter pipe leak

mechanic said "flex/converter pipe leaking exhaust." Suggested replacing catalytic converter. Really? Worth it for a 13 yr old car? (only 60K miles, though).

    If the converter is defective, you need to fix it. If it's not worth it to you, that's your call. It's cheaper and easier to replace the catalyst on an older car because there are good aftermarket replacement parts available.

    Thank you for your response. I would replace for safety and environment reasons, of course, but I have no sense at all what this would/should cost, which would make the difference for me. Do you have a ballpark sense of what I can expect to pay for this?? I think the first mechanic mentioned $600. Maybe that's average? And should I invest $600 in this car??
