Question: failed emission test in CA

We have tried to get our Jimmy to pass CA smog 4 times now and each time it's failed. We have done the cleaning of the fuel system and have even had a tune-up. Apparently every time it fails it's due to the hydrocarbons being too high. We've been told by the smog check place that it must be the catalytic converter but we wanted to know if there is possibly anything else that could cause that. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i would check the oxygen sensor for slow operation. tell them to look for crosscounts. if this reading is low, the o2 cannot regulate the air fuel ratio fast enough. if it is ok, then the cat is probably the culprit.

make sure when you go to smog the truck it is warmed up , also check the EGR valve other than that California's smog tests are the hardest tests to pass with older vehicles, the "cat" isn't cheap either
