Question: evap sm leak

97hondagirl, 2.2L 4 Cylinder, Woburn, MA, November 12, 2010, 08:39
 Rookie

My check eng light came on I got a reading and it read p0442 so is it a hose that is leaking?and how much does it usally cost to fix at a shop and if someone knows how to fix it what do they need for parts?please help

    P0442 means a small leak in the EVAP system. It could be a loose or not sealing gas cap, or other leak on the system. I'd try to tighten or replace the gas cap first, if the code comes back it will need further diagnostics with a smoke pump.
    It's mainly an emission related code and won't cause drive ability issues.

    Thank you for taking the time to help:) I;m going to replace the gas cap in the morning but if it's not the cap do you think ahose could have a crack cause this car was sitting since june 16th 2010 before I got it the reason I ask that is the guy at auto zone who got the reading told me that it's most likley a cracked hose I don't know if the reader told him that or he just knew the possibilities of the p0442 reading what do you think? any advice or help you can give me I would be very thankful !! where is your shop located?hope to hear back from you Thanks again

    Don't just jump in it : ), replace the cap and let's see what happens. The guy at the zone probably has the same amount of knowledge of the EVAP system like you.
    Sure, it could be a hose, a plastic pipe, a charcoal canister, etc... do you want to replace it all?
    I think the cap might fix it.
