 Rookie

We have had an ongoing problem for the last year where the temp gage maxes out and the check engine temp message comes on, then within a minute or so temp goes back to normal. Yesterday had the problem, but the temp stayed maxed and the engine went into safe mode cutting off power. We limped it back to our mechanic who can't get the problem to repeat and the code isn't telling him anything. Any suggestions?
