how do I clean The ERG system on a 1996 Toyota Avalon? Mine failed the smog test, ( California ). The technician Said 99% of the time it just needs cleaning on high milage cars. My toyota is at 250,000 miles.

The EGR passages don't get plugged up so much on the Avalon as they do on Hondas. The vacuum modulator or vacuum electro-switiching valves fail intermittently even though they may test good when you actually test them. You would need test information and procedures to clean the system and get an over view of how things work. There is a company that independent auto repair shops "buy" their information from that offer a very reasonable service to do it yourselvers. You can get a one week subscription or year subscription very cheap. The information is year make and model specific repair procedures, service bulletins, component locations, wiring diagrams ect.... great quality information same as the professionals have ,much better than generic workshop manuals from parts stores, much cheaper than the factory manual try http://www.eautorepair.net/Marketing/Default.asp?VID=125669 and get an online repair manual subscription.
