1999 Subaru Forester Question: engine swap

My engien finally stop working at 280000 miles body is very good so i'm looking for a replacement motor. I was told that I have to match the engine numbers so that i get the right one. Is this ture?? help -

absolutely. the numbers they are talking about is the model number. they must match for everything to work properly. Roy -

only if you don't want to do alot of modifactions and have it cost more... I put a vw motor in my 96 subaru,just because I had the motor.. It cost me MORE in mods than if I bought a used motor... -

I lost the timing belt at 104,000 Blew the engine. This would be for a full swap to a used motor of equivalent miles.
