how hot is very hot?? does it overheat?? i would start with a leak down test to verify the internal of the engine are good. a flow test on the radiator would be next to make sure the coolant is traveling fast enough through the cores. a temp gun will help verify this by checking the temp difference. and lastly, the water pump. it needs to be checked to make sure that it is working correctly. you need a good shop to help you. try our directory tab at the top for a shop near you. Great list of possibilities. My husband's 94 mazda miata mx5 was overheating... first there was a crack in the radiator so we replaced that, but it still had trouble and we found the water pump needed to be replaced, and now he still has to check fluid levels every time he drives and frequently add water. It's getting to be an old car I suppose, so it takes a little more care especially since he drives a Lot each day.

I see this is an old thread but someone may be searching same problem If a Miata starts over heating be it a 1990 or a 2015 There is usually a simple fix Make sure it is overheating and not a failed temp sending unit or gage If it is overheating do not start taking off into modifying the cooling system Track down the problem and fix it If a car has to have coolant added on a regular (every 2 or 3 days ) basis then it is leaking or a blown head gasket Just because a car is old does not mean it has to leak coolant
