Question: engine racing while stopped at an intersection

Question

Visitor, La Jolla, CA, March 23, 2011, 17:53

4 times in the past 6 months I have been at a complete stop at an intersection and the engine RPMs start to increase. I shift into neutral and then the engine returns to an idle. Ever heard of this?

This vehicle is equipped with an Idle Air Control (IAC) valve (stepper motor design). The vehicle computer (ECU) sends and receives signals and automatically adjusts the idle speed. The concern you have described is most likely related to either/or the IAC and/or the ECU. The first step would be to diagnose the vehicle and determine the root problem. Then make the necessary repairs.
