1997 Ford F-150 Question: Engine is running to Rich
Answer #1Bret Bodas from RepairPal Test Shop, May 14, 2009, 16:04Master
Are there any fault codes stored? Where are the Catalytic Converters?
Answer #2patrick mannion from Greg Solow's Engine Room, May 15, 2009, 10:28Master
Has the engine lost power? Retarded ignition or valve timing will cause the exhaust to glow red and result in dramatic loss of power. Rich running conditions causes cat converter melt down. As Bret said trouble codes will determine the diagnostic path to follow.

I have a 1997 f150 5.4 triton, now my exhaust isn't red but my truck runs very rich. You can smell the gas in the exhaust. When its a little cold and rpms level wile drive to 1200, the truck almost want to die but then shot off like a rocket. ? I just do get it
