Engine hesitation? on 2003 Ford Expedition

When I accelerate, there is a hesitation before the engine engages. When I am driving between 40 and 45 mph, the engine makes a jerking/sputtering motion, but this does not when idling at a high rpm.

It sounds like your 2003 Ford Expedition is suffering from an engine misfire under certain load conditions or a faulty transmission torque converter clutch. There may be engine misfire codes stored in the powertrain computer, has the "check engine" light be on or flashing? A good road test with a qualified technician would go a long way to help isolate the cause of your hesitation issue.

How do I check for a misfire because the "check engine" light does not come on nor flashes? I I get a tune-up would this also help. What is a transmission torque converter clutch and what does it do?
