Up until 1996 the on board diagnostic capabilities of the computers on any car really only looked for opens or shorts not the performance of each individual sensor on the car. Your car is not too technologically advanced and this problem you are having should not be so difficult to determine what is going wrong. Perhaps if this car is only intermittently failing you could suggest leaving the car at the shop for a technician to drive. At least once a week I end up driving a customers car home with test equipment hooked up to find problems.
