Just drove from Denver to Tucson and had to drive w/o the ac because when it was on, the engine kept cutting out at random times while on the freeway. When the ac was off, there was no problem. The 'service engine soon' light is on, but was wondering if this might be simply answered? Thanks.

A problem in your emission control system would explain your symptoms.
