When I start the car it will make a scraping or clicking noise and the gauges will jump up and then settle back down. Today the voltage indicator remained lit for about 5 minutes and then turned off. I was thinking bad spark plug or distributor cap. Any ideas?

Ignition problems won't cause this. A "scraping sound when starting" could this be the starter is staying engaged/ not releasing from the engine's ring gear, could be due to damaged teeth on the ring gear/flex plate or a bad starter. A clicking sound could be to low a battery voltage, voltage drop due to bad electrical connections or a bad starter. The battery, starting system, and charging system need to be checked out.
