electrical on 1996 Jaguar XJ6

My car sat in the garage without a battery for a year. I replaced the battery and now I can't put the car in gear nor does any of the dashboard information work (milage; gas etc)

Sounds to me like the electrical system isn't hot. Suggest you start at the battery in the trunk. Make sure it's good and fully charged. Make sure the contact between the cables and battery posts is good. If there's any question clean both posts and cables. Use a small amount of light grease to lube all contact points and tighten the cables. Now start testing circuits: fuse box in trunk, fuse boxes in pass heel kick pannel, fuse boxes underhood. If your test light shows all fuses good you should get a circuit when you turn the key. Even if the engine won't turn over the dash should come alive, the gear selector should move when you depress the brake pedal and with fresh fuel and a cooling system full of water & the engine full of oil it should start. If it doesn't get back to me. Good luck.
