Driving over dips in the road, I hear a creaking noise from the rear suspension. on 2002 Toyota Corolla

What is the problem?

I did not know there were ball joints for the rear wheels. I looked at a diagram and I only saw something called a "knuckle" and 2 arms to control movement. Is the "knuckle" the same as a ball joint?

Knuckle is not the same , but you should inspect ALL bushings/pivot points for wear and binding. Replace or lube as appropriate. Lubing may only be appropriate for diagnostics/isolating source of noise on certain items. When in doubt replace failed/worn part.
