Inside or outside door handle? In either case the inside door panel will need to be removed on your 1997 Pontiac Grand Am. With the panel off the handle is unbolted (or if it is riveted the rivets must be cut), the linkages are remove and installed on the new door handle. The new handle is then reattached using the bolts removed or new rivets as necessary. In most cases the outside handle is much more difficult to replace than the inside handle.
