DRAIN PLUG LEAKS on 1991 Mazda Protege

DRAIN PLUG HAS BEEN LEAKING FOR 2 YEARS. MECHANIC TELLS ME THE THREAD IS WORN AND THE WASHER DOEST STOP THE LEAK. I DONT WANT TO CHANGE THE OIL PAN, WHAT DO YOU THINK OF ADDING TEFLON TO THREAD? ANITA

The threads are not the sealing area and teflon will normally not be effective. You might check on an oversized plug. These often at least temporarily solve the problem. You might also try having the drain hole drilled and tapped to a larger size and use a larger drain plug with a good seal ring. Here's an article I once wrote on the topic : http://www.agcoauto.com/content/news/p2_articleid/118
