    yes,thats called an interference engine and it will bend the valves causing terminal damage.hopefully your engine is still running and its not broken yet.they reccomend changine the timing belt every 60,000 miles.they will last longer tho but its a gamble not worth paying.inexpensive part but tons of labor.
