Question: Does the windshield wipers have a transmission of it's own?

The motor when out on the windshield wipers and the shop told me the transmission for the windshield wipers needed to be replaced also. I thought cars only had a transmission and that was in the engine. They told me the wipers have their own transmission. They charged me for a wiper transmission.

    The windscreen wipers consist of a switch wiring ,a wiper motor a linkage connecting the wiper motor motion to the wiper spindles (this is what they may have called the transmission/s)and the wiper arms attach to the wiper spindles.
