Question: does ac compressor have to be repaired?

Seems to be you would just do without ac.
Mechanic indicated it could damage engine. we just want to get rid of noise--not necessarily have ac option

    If the noise is there when the A/C is off, then you may need to have it fixed.If the compressor was to stop turning it can cause the belts to come off, and maybe disrupt the timing belt, which can cause engine damage.
    If the noise is only there when the A/C is on, then it won't cause a problem. I would however disconnect the electrical connector so it wont turn on.
