Question: Do the rotors have to be replaced with the brake pads

Question

Visitor, Medfield, MA, February 22, 2011, 12:34

I was told that I have about 5% usage left on my rear brake pads and that the rotors should be replaced with the pads. Otherwise the new pads will not last. Do I really need to replace both, since the current pads are not yet worn out and there has been no damage to the rotors.

Rotors need replacement if they are too thin, as determined by the minimum thickness specification from Toyota. Or they need replacement if the rotors are warped or have hot spots on the rotor face. The shop should give you an explanation, and a measurement of the rotors if they are suggesting they need replacement.
