how difficult would it be to change the bulb myself?

    I've seen some of the bulb assemblies installed in Mercedes, and they can be pretty surprisingly complicated. Have you seen the replacement part? That will tell you how tough it is to replace it.

    I have the replacement bulbs, they seem to be plug-in types; but accessing the old ones may pose the problem

    If it's a simple bulb, then that's good news, and you might be able to get to it yourself. Check out alldatadiy.com. There you can get instructions for how to perform the repair for your car.

    I was able to replace a bulb in a parking lot 7 minutes before having dinner...easy access, everything pulls right out and replace. Only problem you may run into is if one bulb is pulled then it may affect others so be sure you have a replacement with you when you pull the bulb.
