2000 Volvo S40 Question: dipstick oil level

 Rookie

checked dipstick and oil level was 4 inches above full line!! drained off excess to get correct reading on stick. would too much oil cause leakage when driving and would it cause the check engine light to come on ?

    Are you sure you wiped off the dipstick then rechecked to oil level? 4" above the full level is way too much, it can cause oil leaks but more likely you'll be blowing smoke out the tailpipe.
    To properly check the oil, I let the engine warm up, turn off and let it sit for 1 minute, then pull the dipstick and wipe it off, then check the level.

    Too much oil can cause many problems including the ones that you mentioned. How did so much oil get into your engine? Is the coolant level normal etc?
