2004 Toyota Sequoia Q&A

2004 Toyota Sequoia Question: differentials

The dealer is recommending to service the front and rear differentials and transfer case, also retorque propeller shaft bolts at 90,000 miles , Is that necessary? -
Answer 1
If the fluids have never been replaced, then this is a good recommendation. While these fluids last much longer than engine oil, they still wear out and become contaminated just the same, so it's good to replace them periodically. -
Answer 2
two weeks ago I had a 20004 Toyota Sequoi in for dealers service - 1 to replace warranty recall of front suspension lower ball joints - front and rear brake pad replacement and resurface front and rear drums-(to address brake light intermittently staying on also had the vsc/vss ;light on - The dealer replaced the ecu skid conrol - at cost of 669 parts total 883 with labor - two weeks later I am driving the auto when pressing gas pedal I hear a consistant thud noise in left front engine - similiar to the thud thumping noise of a flat tire - the noise increased with increased pressue to the gas pedal I tow to dealer and and after several days am advised that I need a rear differential replacement - upon further inquiry I am advised that there is water in mine - do I own a boat - would like to however dont own a boat - upon further question - head service technician states to asst. service manager - that it appears someone replaced the rear differential fluid and did it so quickly they did not even wipe it down . The dealer investigated and advised after they pulled the drive shaft and looked in the system there is a broken gear..and I now need to pay 1500 for the part and 500 for the labor - with all the work done the prior week - could this problem be related in any way - and how much water could wreck this system - oddly we have a local lake with many boat docs not more than 5 miles from the dealer - -
