    Are you talking about the Check Engine Light? If the CEL is on, the controller is trying to tell you that there's something out of range in the engine management system. The light being on means that the controller has detected a fault and there's data and trouble codes stored for diagnostic purposes. It also tells you that performance is compromised to the point that the emissions are above twice the legal limit. If the light's flashing, then it's trying to tell you in addition to the above, that catalytic converter damage is imminent and you need to shut the engine off to avoid damage to the catalyst.
