I've been searching online, but I haven't found a clear answer. I'm trying to figure out a ball-park estimate to determine what time of yearly costs I can expect to fix a 1997 Honda Accord LX with 166,000 in good condition? I've heard $0.52 - 0.59 cent a mile but I don't know if this is a good estimate.

This is a really hard question to answer and totally depends on the condition of the car and what the past few services have been. If the car has been very well maintained, you can expect to limit repair and maintenance mostly to fluid changes and brakes, and a timing belt when necessary. So, to figure out what you're looking at, determine when you'll next need brakes (probably every 30,000 or so miles) and when you're next up for a timing belt. Also, the condition and life of your tires is a factor, too.

The other thing to keep in mind is that getting into high mileages like this, some components may start to wear out, such as shock absorbers and other suspension components.

I totally disagree. I work at a Honda Dealership and it's only a matter of time before any car has a large repair bill, and the newer the car is the more likely it is to have a problem with how much technology and computers and electrical components are in the vehicles these days. While his 1997 is, for the most part, old enough to have avoided most of these innovations that have come along over the last 10 years, the fact is his car is 13 years old, and if he doesn't have a couple grand set aside for if something breaks than he is asking for it.

According to the Highway loss Data Institute who is a non profit organization that monitors how much insurance companies spend on accidents, or, with regards to repair bills how much extended warranty companies pay out, the average repair bill for 2005 was $3,904. While this is an average, and it can be higher or lower, keep in mind even if it is lower you are still faced with a possible 1-2k repair bill. Honda's from the 80's and 90's seem to run forever due to the fact that they lack the accessories computers and electronics the new Honda's have, however, if you are smart, you should set aside $2,000 for unexpected repairs, especially if you rely on this car to get to work, and because the car is too old/too many miles to purchase an extended warranty. And yes, extended warranties are a smart idea (for cars within the last 10 years at least). Not so smart on older vehicles. Of course tell that to someone who has had a blown engine or transmission. When something as mundane as a window regulator motor for power windows on a Toytoa or Honda can cost upwards of $700 or $800 dollars you have to be prepared for the worst.
