I wonder if the battery died because the alternator was not charging. Its hard to guess at the cause of your Jeep's problem without being able to do some basic diagnostic tests but try to jump start the car and see if it will start.

it has a new altenator in it so it isnt that, we are replacing the battery cables first and seeing if that fixes it if not then i guess the next step is going to be sending the computer out to get inspected.

If you are getting fuel, the you can be reasonably sure that your Crank Position Sensor is working as the PC is actuating the ASD and fuel Pump relays. Remove the distributor cap and turn the engine over to verify that the distributor shaft is turning. Sometimes, the plastic distributor drive gear breaks or strips the teeth off of the gears. Also check your Park / Neutral Position Switch The center terminal of the park/neutral position switch is the starter-circuit terminal. It provides the ground for the starter solenoid circuit through the selector lever in PARK and NEUTRAL positions only. The outer terminals on the switch are for the backup lamp circuit.
    SWITCH TEST
To test the switch, remove the wiring connector. Test for continuity between the center terminal and the transmission case. Continuity should exist only when the transmission is in PARK or NEUTRAL.
Shift the transmission into REVERSE and test continuity at the switch outer terminals. Continuity should exist only when the transmission is in REVERSE. Continuity should not exist between the outer terminals and the case. Check gearshift linkage adjustment before replacing a switch that tests faulty.
