vehicle has had a hard life, and trying to help a friend that has had a stroke. how can we get the car into N so it can be taken to repair shop?

MasterCheck to see if your battery has 12.5 or more volts at the terminals, first and foremost. Then with your foot on the brake and the key on see if the brake lights work, because the shift lock is triggered by the brake light switch.
