cvt transmission safe to buy? on 2013 Nissan Altima

I've heard a lot of horror stories. Set them straight for me.

some issues but they need service approx every 30k miles not matter what they say. also tehy are very expensive to repair or repl. i would not buy a car with one

I respectfully have to disagree with the first answer. The transmission is sealed and therefore take very little service. Depending on the vehicle, it's true that they recommend service every 30,000 to 60,000 miles, but it's only a fluid drain and refill. No substantial work is done and they are extremely reliable. Nissan is one of the best selling car brands in America, and virtually every car they make contains a CVT transmission. i have replaced numerous cvt trans due to lack of maint and trans failure. its your decision to deal with but a salesman is a salesman. my friend works at corona nissan and strongly agrees with me.
