Car was running fine, parked overnight, cranks but won't start. New battery, has spark, fuel pump can be heard running on key up, timing belt okay, all fuses appear okay, cycled key five times to clear alarm lock out - no good.

You're going to have to get the computer systems scanned to see what diagnostic information is stored in the vehicle computers. This diagnostic info will help you to diagnose the problem, and without that it's only guessing, which is likely to be wrong.
Find a shop that has the proper equipment to check all the computers in your Volvo.
Ask them to be sure the immobilizer system is OK, and have them check the B+ cable for corrosion, both of these can cause this issue.
