my sister was told by her mechanic that she has a cracked boot and also warned her NOT to continue driving without repair. She could be in a very nasty crash - is this a valid comment? What really can happen with a cracked boot?

If you have a cracked CV boot, the real question is 'does the car make a clicking sound when turning'? If it does, then the CV joint is worn out and the axle will eventually break and the car will come to a stop. I have seen some cars screech to a halt from this, but have heard of no bad accidents in over 22 years of work in the field, but if it is noisy, it is not safe. If there is no noise, then you have some time until it does click.

You need to put a axle in it now. You want to wait till the C/V joint fails, do you?
