See previously submitted question regarding speedometer and mechanic stating it's a bad "reed". How much to repair and can a local mechanic fix it or is it truly something that needs to be sent out somewhere else for refurbishing? Can the issue be something else not just the reed? The mechanic said he would check the cable first since it can be replaced on the spot. Obviously it wasn't that.

1991 Subaru Legacy Question: Cost of speedometer repair

I can't locate the previous questions, but to answer part of this question: if there is something wrong with the gauge cluster, then it is true that these need to be sent out to a repair specialist. It's not necessarily very expensive to do so, but this is totally standard.
