I have a 1993 Ford Escort wagon with all the symptoms of an oil pump failing. Only has 71,000 on the engine (senior citizen owned before me. I'd appreciate an informed opinion as to cost. Does the engine need to be removed could it hopefully be as simple as dropping the oil pan; assuming the pump is located near the oil itself?

why?? what is the problem?? what is the pressure?? it is a straight forward job not requiring the motor to be removed. pump is about 9o and the labor is about 3oo.

Thanks Roy: Should have grabbed my Chilton's before asking about engine removal. Don't know or have a way to test oil pressure, it's just developed the classic signs - very noisy lifters on startup until it warms - neighbor down the street could hear it. Even has the whining sound that might be the pump itself, but I doubt you'd be able to hear it. Dealership is pricing a change, I'll use your estimate as a reference to determine if they are way over cost. Thanks!
