I saw a small puddle of antifreeze under the engine on the ground. The car drove ok but shut off and the engine while running was cackling. The temp. gauge was ok and there was no other visible indicators. Did the engine shut down as a precaution or is it toast?

the only way to really tell is to put some coolant in to the cooling system when the car has cooled down and then start it and see how it runs. Don't run it for long because you have a coolant leak that needs to be repaired. if it runs ok and does not blow out white smoke, indicating a blown head gasket, then TOW IT to a good German Car repair shop. Best of Luck!
