Question: Coil failure due to excessive spark plug gap

Question

Visitor, 4.6L V8, Beverly Hills, CA, April 03, 2011, 14:08

How much is too much. Recommended gap is .054. They were set at .060. NGK plugs were used. 4 coils failed since the tuneup.
Motorcraft plugs have been put in, gaped at .054, bad coils replaced. No problems since. Was it the gap or the NGK plugs.
Thanks.

Coil boots on these engines need to be replaced when you perform a tune up. It is very likely that you reused the old boots, and the coils began failing after install. They just don't insulate and keep spark in when you remove and reinstall them.
