codes on 1996 Volkswagen Passat

code comes up for a camshaft sensor, do not know where it is runs ruff, hard to start.

Camshaft sensor failure or erratic signal will definitely contribute to poor running and hard starting. The sensor is located at the top of the engine right next to the ignition coil pack. The sensor has a three wire electrical connection and is secured with one bolt (I think it has an allen key slot or requires a 10mm socket to remove the bolt.) If you look up they often have good accurate pictures of components (not always but may help)

Timing belt issues will also set camshaft position fault.
