    If there is a Check Engine Light on the scan tool should read the information stored in the computer of your car. Either the scan tool has a problem or the OBD2 diagnostic connector does not have power or ground at pins #5 and 16. http://www.auterraweb.com/obdiipinout.html
    There is a company that independent auto repair shops get their information from, this same information is available inexpensively for people that work on their own cars.. The information is year make and model specific, covering repair procedures, torque specifications, fluid capacities and specifications, service bulletins, component locations, wiring diagrams ect....     Make sure pins are good in connector and key is in the on position.
