Sounds like the Vanos may not have been adjusted properly. This takes special tools, that are very expensive and have to be set at critical dimensions i.e. 3.4 mm, not 3.3 or 3.5 etc.
I just worked with a Vanos problem this week and the actual problem was that the Vanos cam gear adjustment had slipped, and was setting the 33 Vanos code. So be sure that the shop knows about all of these intricate details, or the Vanos problem will not go away and you will have a lack of power and poor fuel economy,which were the symptoms for the car that was repaired in my shop.
