Question: clunk felt in rear while transmission is switching gears???

 Rookie

I have a 95 MB c280. since i had the car it always makes a hard "clunk" everytime the trans switches gears. i was htinking it could possibly be the diff mounts or the diff pinion bearing but i am not sure. can you help me out with this????PLEASE
