Chevrolet Recalls 1997 Malibus Due to Missing Passenger Side Air Bag Module Fasteners

Chevrolet is recalling 1997 Malibu vehicles because the passenger side air bag module may not be fastened to the instrument panel. If the air bag deploys, the module may separate from the instrument panel and injure the occupant. Dealers will inspect the passenger side air bag module for the presence of fasteners and install missing fasteners.

Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE FASTENERS THAT SECURE THE PASSENGER AIR BAG MODULE TO THE INSTRUMENT PANEL TIE BAR WERE OMITTED.

Consequence: IF THE AIR BAG DEPLOYS, THE MODULE COULD SEPARATE FROM THE INSTRUMENT PANEL STRIKING AND INJURING AN OCCUPANT.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE AIR BAG MODULE FOR THE PRESENCE OF THE FASTENERS AND, IF NECESSARY, INSTALL ANY FASTENERS THAT MAY HAVE BEEN OMITTED.

Notes: OWNER NOTIFICATION: OWNER NOTIFICATION WILL BEGIN DURING JULY 1997. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-222-1020.
