Steering Gear Pitman Arm Can Fail
The steering gear pitman shaft may fail, resulting in loss of steering ability.
General Motors will notify owners of affected vehicles beginning April 4, 2012. There may be no symptoms related to this recall. If you don't receive notification and you feel you should have, please contact your dealer. It’s helpful to have your vehicle identification number (VIN) handy when you call.
The steering gear pitman shaft may not have been adequately hardened and could break. If this occurs, a loss of steering ability will result, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will inspect the steering gear and replace the steering gear pitman shaft if necessary to correct this concern. The General Motors recall number is 12005.

STEERING:GEAR BOX:SHAFT PITMAN
GENERAL MOTORS (GM) IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2012 CHEVROLET EXPRESS AND SUBURBAN VEHICLES, AND GMC SAVANA AND YUKON XL HEAVY DUTY VEHICLES. THE STEERING GEAR PITMAN SHAFT MAY NOT HAVE BEEN ADEQUATELY HARDENED AND COULD FRACTURE.
IF THIS CONDITION OCCURS, A LOSS OF STEERING COULD RESULT, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
GM WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE STEERING GEAR AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE STEERING GEAR PITMAN SHAFT. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON APRIL 4, 2012.
