Question: check engine light then no pick up surge & bucks idels ok then dies

i own a 95 nissan sentra, (automatic) it was running fine but all of a sudden i start it and it starts & idles fine but
the check engine lights on, the problem is when i drive i get lot of hesitation like it surges, it will go then bog down
a second then pick up buckin kinda, it will get up to speed but its not good I thought (hoping it was a fuelfilter) but dont
think that would trigger the check light.the next day I strarted the car without really warming it up much again it ideled ok
bit high but thats normal when cold, i left and drove about 1/4 of a mile and it died out.i tried to start it,it souded like
it wanted to turn over but didnt. please any ideas would really help me! robbie741@hotmail.com

    Hey Rob,
    When the check engine light comes on there will be diagnostic information stored in the engine control module. This information needs to be retrieved to know where to start your diagnosis.
    If you want to do this yourself, get a good repair manaul (http://bit.ly/alldata_repair_manuals
    ) and pull the diagnostic codes and use the troubleshooting info related to the code. Or take it to a shop and have them do it for you: http://repairpal.com/weymouth-auto-repair
