Question: check engine light is on/appears to be mis firing

Rookie

The check engine light came on...engine was running fine. Manual said to be sure using Premium gas and that gas cap was on tight. Already using premium and cap was tight. So we filled the tank with premium gas on way home last night. Light is still on this morning. The manual said to give it 3 cycles of travel. So on way to work this morning the engine seems to miss on acceleration at times...not always. What should I do?
