Question: check engine light is on

In the past the check engine light would go on after getting gas. When I had a small shop mechanic he would just turn the light off and not charge me. Now I go to a toyota dealership for lof and they want $120 to diagnose why light is on. Any helpful advice would be appreciated. I'm a 64 year old female and I don't want to do repairs myself; my brother tells me he bought a checker for $40 and uses it himself. Thanks for any help.

    Make sure each time you get gas that you turn the gas cap so that it is tight ( you should hear it click several times.
    Toyota have some problems ( no more than any other car manufacturer) with the evap emission system. The purge control valve and charcoal canister fail but the system needs to be properly diagnosed it could be a s simple as a vacuum hose that has fallen off.

    Thanks for your reply. Yes, I've often been told to be sure the cap is tight and I do this although there is no clicking and it will turn just so far. When you say Toyota has evap emission problesm, etc., are these serious and do I have to pay the $120 to get a diagnosis and then pay for a repair which might not even exist as in the past it was just a fluck when getting gas??????

    WHOOOAHH!!! Why dont YOU just reset yourself,, in MOST cases all you have to do is shut car off,, push and hold trip reset,,,turn key to position just before it tries to start and all lights will come on then one by one will go off...or if digital trip,,,sometimes you will see a series of dashes start to descend till there are no more... and that is it!! If it is something serious or more than just a reset the light will come back on in again,,,if this is not the correct procedure just go by a dealership and ask one of the mechanics on the side how to reset it--usually they are cool and will quickly give you the trick good luck
