is there one single bulb for the check engine light and what does a dealership usually charge for just the bulb &what is the diagnostic code

    In most cases there is one single bulb for the check engine light. There may or may not be a fault code for an open check engine light circuit on your 1998 BMW 323i. On most newer cars the bulbs are not replaceable, the gauges cluster must be removed and sent to a specialty repair shop for bulb replacement. You could try contacting your local BMW dealer parts department and ask if the "check engine light" bulb is "available" and "serviceable".
