WELL I HAVE A 1996 JEEP CHEROKEE 4.0L AND IT DOES HAVE A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. TRY THIS TEST: GO UNDER THE JEEP AND FIND THE CABLE THAT BELONGS TO THE OXYGEN SENSOR. UN PLUG THE CABLE. GO AND TURN ON THE VEHICLE. WATCH THE DASHBOARD AND YOU WILL NOTICE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT GO ON LETTING YOU KNOW THAT THEIR IS A SENSOR PROBLEM (WHICH IN REALITY DOES NOT EXIST SINCE YOU ONLY UNPLUGGED THE CABLE) AFTER YOU FIGURE OUT THAT YOU DO HAVE A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, TURN OFF THE VEHICLE. GO UNDER AGAIN AND RECONNECT THE CABLE AGAIN. TURN ON THE JEEP AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT SHOULD GO OFF. IF IT DOESN'T, TURN OFF THE JEEP AND DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE CABLE TO THE BATTERY FOR 29 SECONDS. RECONNECT THE NEGATIVE CABLE AND THAT SHOULD DO THE JOB. BY DOING THIS, YOU JUST HAVE DONE A RESET TO THE COMPUTER AND IT ERASES THE OLD CHECK ENGINE READING.
your jeep has one.if you've never seen it on then thats good.it would display a (check engine or service engine soon or maybe an outline of a wrench)check engine lights have been around for a long time but in 1996 all vehicles from there on in this country are obd2 certified(onboard diagnostics generation 2)
